Braille Trivia

Did you know that today is Braille Day? Did you know today is Trivia Day as well? Did you know I can connect the two?

Here’s a bit of Braille Trivia: Believe it or not, I used to be able to read Braille. It’s true. You see, my father went blind when he was 38 years old. After he got out of rehab, he taught me how to read and write in Braille. I wish I would have kept up with it but it’s like anything else; if you don’t use it, you lose it.

I do remember that when you write in Braille, you write backwards--from right to left--but you read it frontwards--from right to left. That sounds crazy but if you connect it to paper crafting, it makes perfect sense. LOL! Writing in Braille is like embossing on cardstock with a template and a stylus. You work from the back to make the image puff up on the front of the paper.

Now, it’s your turn to connect Braille and Trivia. Who came up with Braille? When and where?

The first person to comment here with the correct answer will win their pick of a free file. To top that off, I’ll hold a random drawing of everyone who comments for another prize.

Get ready. Get set. Go!

Until next time, Happy Creative Time!

Very interesting, I never knew that about Braille, the forwards and backwards. I had no clue about the inventor.

I just googled it & read that Louis was only 15 years old when he created Braille! I thought that was very interesting. Just a little more trivia for Braille/Trivia day!

Glad you could learn it. My 4th grader has had exposure for several years, because a classmate has his Braille typewriter in the room, plus an aide to help him. My fingers don't seem sensitive enough- or maybe I'm just not working hard enough!

I used to be able to read most of the letters and make sense of it, but I was self taught from a book mark and book from the local library, and I had no use for it, so it is long gone. ASL I was better at and used for longer, but it too is on the downward side of the hill. Thanks for sharing the bit of trivia. Maybe now I will know something when my Mom challenges me to Trivial Pursuit! LOL
